T4A slips for recent tax years. This guide can't decide if you're an employee or self-employed, or if a scholarship is tax-free.
The question
Does receiving a T4A mean I am self-employed?
No. A T4A can report pensions, annuities, some lump-sum payments, fees for services, scholarships and more. The box the amount is in tells you what kind of income it is and how to report it.
Read the box before you report it
A pension and fees for services can both appear on a T4A, but they're reported differently. Scholarships may be partly or fully tax-free. Don't add up every box as employment income, or assume every amount is taxed the same way.
Example: fees aren't profit
Say a T4A shows $5,000 of fees for services. That number alone doesn't tell you your expenses, if you're running a business, or the tax you owe. If you had $1,000 of allowable business expenses, your profit before other adjustments would be $4,000. Whether those expenses are allowable is a separate question.
Don't enter the $5,000 in the tax refund calculator, which is for employment income only. It doesn't handle business expenses or the CPP that self-employed people pay.
Tax may not have been taken off
Some payments have tax taken off and some don't. Check the slip instead of assuming. No tax taken off doesn't mean the income is tax-free.
Next steps
Work out what the payment was for and follow the CRA's instructions for that box. If the payer's description doesn't match your records, sort that out before you estimate anything.
- Confirm the box number and type of payment.
- Keep the contracts, statements and expense records that go with it.
- Use filing software that handles that kind of income. Beaver Ledger doesn't have a T4A calculator.
